Christmas Eve 2017 has to have been one of the best days of my life so far.

I’m engaged and can’t believe it! Now Holy crap it’s time to start planning this bad boy! Stay tuned for my mental breakdowns, Bridezilla moments (I’m allowing 4 in total) and a completely confused girl trying to plan her perfect day one day at a time.

I’m happy so what’s wrong with me?

Yes you did read the title correctly I’m happy and I’m panicking about it.

2017 has really been a tough, challenging, life changing and a massive learning experience for me I have to say. This year really didn’t pan out as I initially thought , planned or envisioned and to be fair it’s not completely over yet but wow do i feel different.

I started the year off with a new job, a brand new haircut which I’m struggling to still grow out , I hated my body and basically wasn’t confident. The last few points have been the same for the past few years but this brand new job thing was brand spanking new to me. My previous workplace was my first ever media job and I was there for over three years and changing was a huge YOLO moment for me and I pushed myself and I’m glad I did.

It feels like 2017 has been on fast forward and it has flown by and I had a little moment in the car today and listed everything that has happened this year and I realised something changed in me, scared the crap out of me but something changed. Here’s the lowdown and some snaps of the year, no judgement!

  1. Started at a new media agency in a Manager role working on a demanding client patch
  2. Cut my hair into a Lob then went shorter and shorter until I could no longer put it in a cute bun and I started to look too edgy for my personality, I’m too awkward to function at times, believe me.
  3. Work became a massive part of my life in not such a good way. I was getting up at 5am everyday getting into the office by 7am , not leaving my desk for lunch leaving work for the night around 8pm and by the time i got home showered i was in bed by 11:30 and doing the same thing over and over again …. My body took a toll
  4. Wisdom teeth…. enough said
  5. I started to hate working due to the fact that I didn’t allow myself to have a life and stress took over… I developed anxiety which followed closely with multiple panic attacks on a daily basis to the point that I couldn’t walk.. true story and I always thought people were exaggerating about Panic attacks, they’re not!
  6. Six months into the year I had my ah ha moment I needed to make a change! So i started looking for other jobs , let’s phrase this as a much needed sea change for my health, sanity and my career
  7. I finally caught my break – I received an email on LinkedIn about a Media position based not in the CBD( YES) and was looking to fill the position asap. I applied, interviewed, went through rounds of exams and follow up interviews and got it
  8. My Nonno ( Grandfather) needed to have open heart surgery which would see him in hospital for at least 3-4 weeks. He ended up staying almost 3 months and this took a massive toll on my family.
  9. I’ve been in my new job over 2 months and actually LOVE IT! It’s something completely new to me and I have a life! I’m able to go to the gym, wake up at a decent hour, get home earlier than i did previously, drive to work and it’s challenging me everyday which is great!
  10. I have an amazing support system of family and friends who never gave up on me and I”m eternally greatful
  11. With my new found happiness Ive learnt to accept the fact I wont look like Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner or any Instagram Fitness Blogger I’ll be a little chunky but hey I’m still here
  12. I have started to not care what people think – This has translated into not wearing makeup to the shops on the weekends, creating content for this little blog, going to the gym and trying those new machines which I have no clue how to use, asking questions when I don’t understand what people are talking about and not being afraid of being judged.

Snaps from this 2017 which truely highlight the above

A huge amount of help came from Mia freedman’s book Work, Strife, Balance. I’m not one usually for self help books but I heard Mia speak earlier in the year about her journey and it dawned on me that not everyone has a straight path that they follow, it’s bloody wonky! Her book has helped me understand that’s its okay to change your mind, if you’re not happy do something about it, you can’t have everything in life, be proud of your body and embrace the fact you’re a women and that you can do this!

For me after roughly six months of hating everything, everyone and myself I promised myself I don’t want to get back to that point. So today out of all days I looked down at my frumpy arms , my seriously untoned stomach and random acne spots and said SHUT UP AND BE HAPPY! I freaked out for a moment because this is a brand new feeling that in 24 years I have actually never really experienced. I’m not saying that I’ll be 100% rainbows, positive vibes 24/7 but the cloud above my head has lightened slightly and I need to start embracing it and trying it out rather than freaking out!

I know this such a random piece but it’s been an amazing way to show myself that for all the stress, drama and testing times this year the little positives need to shine and I need to work on that more.

How to navigate casual Fridays

When I first read Causal Fridays in my contract I thought wow is this a jumper, leggings and my favourite Nike type of day? mmm no Stef no no no.

Casual Fridays are all about unwinding from a stressful 4 days at work and having a relaxed vibe with your outfit. Don’t get me wrong theres nothing better than leggings and a jumper on a Friday night but when you’re at work you still need to power dress no matter what day it is.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be showing you some of my go to Casual Friday looks and outfits that still are relaxed but still safe just incase a last minute meeting pops into my diary, gotta love those! For my first outfit I went for a simple jeans, tee and statement Blazer to give that kick of ” yeah I’m relaxed but I’m can run a meeting at any moment”

Let me know your thoughts on this I have snapped a few pieces from The Iconic and included the direct links below for all your shopping needs.

How to survive your first media job

I’m 24 years old working as a Media Manager on one of the most demanding accounts in Australia. When people ask how old I am they are automatically in shock as to how I’m a manger, 24 and still manage to get the occasional breakout and listen to One direction and Justin Bieber #Bielber4life. Throughout my university degree I interned, I felt that by giving up all my spare time and slowly digging away at my social life that this would lead me to a job straight out of university, and it did!

I’ve been very lucky to work with some of the best people in the business who have taught me a thing or two about managing and working in media. I have also worked with a heap of newbies who have jumped off the graduation train and into the pits of co-ordinator life and often look to me to give some form of advice to help them get through it.

Working in media has taught me soo many things from learning how to negotiate your way through situations to knowing how to work a room. Now for all my fresh university graduates or students who are still in their first, second or third year of Communications, here are some of my tips to surviving your first media job!

  • Dress to impress – You will find when you walk into your agency on your first day people are walking around in Jeans, Converse and more than likely have a topknot of some sort. Working in media is quite casual because let’s face it we’re cool. My tip and I’m still doing this 3 years later is dress to impress! Always be the person everyone looks at and thinks damn they look good. Don’t get me wrong jeans, connies and a topknot is great but I save those outfits for Fridays, which are casual but I only wear this when I have no meetings or publisher lunches (I will explain publisher lunches soon)
  • Working a room – On your first day more than likely your Executive or Boss will take you around the agency to meet everyone. You will meet 10 Jessica’s, 3 Michael’s and 4 Holly’s and basically after your first introduction to the first team everyone looks the same. Top tip take look at the person’s desk phone it will 9 times out of 10 have their name on it, so when you go back to ask a question you look like a boss for remembering their name.
  • Grab a coffee – Anyone that knows me knows I’m awkward and extremely quiet at times meaning I miss out on making those connections with people from the start. What I have learnt in media is that people cannot function without coffee in the morning. So what does this mean? This basically means that there will be a few people who have their favourite coffee places around the office; they will all go together to grab their soy latte’s and cappuccinos. My advice even if you don’t like coffee go with them! This will allow you to join a group and get to know people better and it’s a daily ritual so you’re guaranteed to speak to someone at least once during the day. If you’re not into coffee like I was when I first started get a latte with one sugar it does not taste at all like coffee.
  • Bonding with Publishers- Publishers are the people who you interact with most in your first few years in media. These guys are your media contacts they are in charge of selling you spaces to place your ads and every single media type has about 10000 of them. A key example would be if your client were a Luxury fashion brand and they want to have ads in magazines, you would be speaking to your magazine publishers most likely on a daily basis. A word of advice is to build connections with these people, they are always extremely helpful and friendly and it’s a great way to make connections outside your agency. Publishers will always go above and beyond to get your clients business and it’s their job to ensure you’re taken care of. What this means is that you will be taken out to Lunch on a Friday, get your nails done, have an afternoon of drinks at the most fabulous bar in Sydney so enjoy it! But in saying this always be grateful and follow up your catch up with an email saying thank you this build’s relationships.
  • Media Freebies – From Magazines, chocolates, movie tickets, concert tickets, lunches to trips interstate media offers its loyal employees an array of goodies. My friends always tell me that I don’t work hard because I’m seen checking into great restaurants on a Friday, or I get free tickets to a movie while I am extremely lucky I do work my butt off! There have been times when I have been at work from 7am – 10pm getting work done. So when you do receive these perks grab them! But as I mentioned before always be grateful.

I hope my 5 little tips have given some insight into how to survive in media.

Let me know your thoughts and if you have any tips or tricks to making a splash without drowning!

Keeping it real: Better than Sex

Two Faced’s Better Than Sex Mascara was one of those cult products that every beauty lover had in their makeup drawer, me being one of them.

The packaging, the cute name, the long list of bloggers supporting this product and the Urban Decay brand saw me literally run into my local Mecca Store and pick up the lucky last one from the display.

I’ve been using this mascara for the past 2 months almost every day and I thought it’s now the best time to write up my review and be real. So see my below my thoughts, opinions and relevant gifs which highlight my thoughts on this product

Product Name: Better Than Sex Mascara – Black

Purchased: 2017

Usage: Almost every day for the past 2 months

Initial thoughts dumped straight from my brain: How cute is this, If every Beauty Blogger is using this than it must be good, Gosh i hope this makes my eyelashes look fake, 1 coat yeah?

Mid-way Review ( 1 month):  Okay this isn’t as good as i thought, Why does it keep smudging, It leaves a black residue by 3pm, okay my eyelashes do look long, maybe if i don’t use as much.

End review: Even though I’m a Urban Decay fan I wasn’t really convinced this was the BEST mascara everyone has been mentioning. It did give me luscious long lashes but by 3pm it left a black residue under my eyes and it smudges. I’m sorry to say but i don’t think i would be purchasing this one. Now back on the hunt for the be all and end all mascara

Rating ( 1- Hell no , 3- Meh, 5 It’s already in my shopping cart Bit*hes)

2 – Sorry!
